This month I started a three-month artist residency at Seattle’s **Town Hall** along with scholar-in-residence David Mitsuo Nixon.

From the first time I performed a spoken word piece before a book reading at Town Hall like 12 years ago, I’ve always loved the building’s architecture and atmosphere. Especially the main room, which used to be a Christian Science church. There’s a north-facing atrium with 3-story high ceilings and daylight so soft you can lay your head on it.

In addition to attending and hosting events in this historic space, I get a key to the building so I can do things like write in complete silence after hours, take ill photos, and record vocals with incredible acoustic textures in the main room without using that “large hall reverb” plug-in. While I will be working on my own individual art during my stay, the Town Hall folks were cool with allowing me to integrate all my current collaborative projects (Blue Scholars, Rappers W/ Cameras, The Bar) into the residency, which concludes with a conclusionary presentation of my work on **April 28**.

But before he created the perfect home for himself in New York City, Huang burned his way through American culture, defying every “model minority” stereotype along the way as he looked for a place to call his own. In his memoir Fresh Off the Boat (and at Town Hall, in conversation with Blue Scholars’ similarly outspoken vocalist Geo), Huang shares stories of assimilation and alienation; his misadventures as an unlikely lawyer and stand-up comic; and how he finally threw everything he loved into his own restaurant, bringing together a legacy stretching back to China—and the shards of global culture he’d melded into his own identity. Presented by Town Hall as part of its Arts & Culture series, with University Book Store.
